Maria Elisabeth Aigner analyses the profound effect of insults. They can shatter self-esteem and even lead to illness or violence. As a theologian she argues that emotional and psychological injuries are often underestimated, even though they cause social conflicts and social division. "It is a problem when people are unable to deal with emotional wounds and freeze in bitterness," Aigner emphasises. Research findings also show that chronic stress, which often goes hand in hand with offence, has a negative impact on the immune system. Mindful processing, forgiveness and reflection are crucial in order to avoid far-reaching, destructive consequences.
