About the study programme

This interdisciplinary doctoral programme teaches and fosters theoretical understanding and methodological skills for academic work at the intersection of various different disciplines. The skills acquired are valued for research at the intersection of natural and social sciences, as well as for practical roles in a wide range of professional fields. Areas of particular focus include: paradigms, theories, and ways of thinking in different disciplines; researching and working at the interface between different disciplines; practical relevance and transdisciplinarity in the use of empirical approaches.

Qualifications profile

Being geared towards producing an original piece of academic work, the doctoral programme requires the ability

to turn topical questions in the discipline into research projects, as well as to answer them through autonomous research work;
to engineer the necessary collaboration (which may be interdisciplinary) and the networking within the scientific community (e.g. participation in conferences) that will guarantee a link to current academic discourse;
to critically analyse, evaluate and synthesise complex ideas in the relevant area of expertise, and their relevance to overarching historical and social trends.

Doctoral schools

Students will be admitted to the doctoral school by the dean of studies based on submission of the form entitled “Prequalification and registration for a doctoral programme”.

Those studying for an interdisciplinary doctorate at the Faculty of Environmental, Regional and Educational Sciences are expected to register for one of the following doctoral schools, depending on the subject of their doctoral thesis:
