What are the special features of an individual study programme?
Equivalent
The new degree programme must be equivalent to a subject-related or interdisciplinary degree programme at the university.
Innovative
The new degree programme must be innovative.
Unique
The new degree programme must not be offered as such at any other university or university of applied sciences.
New
The educational objective of the new degree programme cannot be achieved or cannot be sufficiently achieved by an existing degree programme.
Qualified
Admission to an individual Master's degree programme requires the completion of a relevant Bachelor's or Diplom degree programme.
Structured
An individual course of study is not a series of courses that you have already completed.
Alternatively, the use of elective options in existing curricula and structured courses such as Master's Plus, interdisciplinary modules or micro-credentials is a good way of combining the content of different courses.
What do I need to consider when creating the curriculum?
The model curriculum for individual Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes must be used as a template for creating the curriculum. All formal and study law requirements are already included in the model curricula.
In terms of content, the following points must be observed for both the individual Bachelor's degree programme and the individual Master's degree programme:
- The curriculum must be clearly different from an existing degree programme.
- It must not be possible to study the requested degree programme by making use of elective options within the framework of an existing degree programme.
- The subjects of the individual study programme should not be taken predominantly from previous studies already completed.
The individual degree programme must be equivalent to a relevant degree programme at the university.
It should be noted that the structure of the degree programme must be based on that of a regular degree programme in a related subject. This means that the curriculum must contain both introductory and advanced courses and that there must be a sensible ratio of lectures and courses with an examination component.
Application
To submit an application, the documents listed below must be sent to individuellesstudium(at)uni-graz.at.
The application can be submitted at any time, but admission to an individual study programme is only possible during the general admission period. As the approval procedure for an individual study programme is very time-consuming, it is recommended to submit the application approximately one semester before the planned admission to the study programme.
Documents for the application
The application form must be completed online and digitally signed. If you do not have a digital signature, you can also print out the completed form and sign it by hand.
The sample curriculum for individual Bachelor's or individual Master's degree programmes must be used.
The letter of motivation must include the reasons why you would like to pursue this individual course of study. In particular, you should explain why the desired educational goal cannot be achieved through a regular study programme.
- Proof of completion of a relevant bachelor's or diploma degree programme
- Curriculum of the relevant bachelor's or diploma programme
FAQs
In individual Bachelor's degree programmes, an introductory and orientation phase is mandatory, which contains introductory courses amounting to 6 - 20 ECTS credits. Only courses amounting to 22 ECTS credits can be completed before the STEOP is fully completed. No STEOP is planned for individual Master's degree programmes.
Regardless of the subject focus of the degree programme, only the academic degree "Bachelor", abbreviated to "BA", can be awarded for individual Bachelor's degree programmes in accordance with § 55 UG and the academic degree "Master", abbreviated to "MA", for individual Master's degree programmes. The awarding of other academic degrees, such as "Bachelor/Master of Science - BSc/MSc" or "Bachelor of Arts - BA/MA" is not possible.
Since individual studies are completely free and in order to ensure a meaningful profile formation in individual studies, no or only very few free electives or other elective options should be provided in the degree programme. The following upper limit applies to free electives:
- Bachelor's degree programmes: 15 ECTS credits
- Master's degree programmes: 10 ECTS credits
Courses that only appear in degree programmes with admission procedures can only be used in an individual degree programme if you have passed the relevant admission procedure.
In this case, equivalence refers both to the number of ECTS credits and to the level and content of the degree programme.
This means that individual Bachelor's degree programmes must be worth 180 ECTS credits, while individual Master's degree programmes must be worth 120 ECTS credits.
In addition, an individual study programme must have a level comparable to that of a regular Bachelor's or Master's programme and lead coherently to the desired educational goal.
