About the study programme

This doctoral programme teaches and fosters theoretical understanding and methodological skills for academic work in the fields of cultural and social studies and the humanities. It focuses on the cultural manifestations of human existence and responses to it. The skills acquired are valued in research contexts in cultural and social studies and the humanities, as well as for practical roles in a wide range of professional fields. There is a strong emphasis on methods of empirical sociological research, as well as hermeneutic, casuistic, and reconstructionist approaches based on the analysis of texts, images and interactions.

Qualifications profile

Being geared towards producing an original piece of academic work, the doctoral programme requires the ability

to turn topical questions in the discipline into research projects, as well as to answer them through autonomous research work;
to engineer the necessary collaboration (which may be interdisciplinary) and the networking within the scientific community (e.g. participation in conferences) that will guarantee a link to current academic discourse;
to critically analyse, evaluate and synthesise complex ideas in the relevant area of expertise, and their relevance to overarching historical and social trends.

Doctoral schools

Students will be admitted to the doctoral school by the dean of studies based on submission of the form entitled “Prequalification and registration for a doctoral programme”.

Those studying for a doctorate in Humanities at the Faculty of Environmental, Regional and Educational Sciences are expected to register for one of the following doctoral schools, depending on the subject of their doctoral thesis:
