Financing your studies

There are a few options for funding to enable students to concentrate on their education and provide financial security. These range from government funding programmes to the university’s own support schemes.

As far as the university itself is concerned, initial costs are not particularly high. In fact, for the minimum duration of study plus a “tolerance” semester, it is just € 22.70 per semester (as of study year 2024/25 it will be € 24.70). The tuition fee of € 363.36 is to be paid after this period.

National support schemes for students

If your parents live in Austria, they can be eligible for ‘family allowance’ (Familienbeihilfe) up to the students’ age of 24. In addition to this, international students from EU/EEA countries with a low family-income can apply for a study grant.

Within the university there are numerous possibilities for financial support during your studies. For example, funding may be awarded for outstanding academic achievements and there are some research scholarships available for academic projects.

Merit-based scholarships

You can apply for a merit-based scholarship if you meet the requirements specified by the relevant faculty.

These can be awarded, on application, to students with Austrian citizenship, EEA citizens as well as stateless persons and refugees (as defined in Section 4 of the Student Support Act (StudFG)) who are following an ordinary course at the University of Graz (Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz) and have achieved outstanding academic results in accordance with the degree programme regulations.
